If you look back to your childhood, there is always that one teacher you recall so clearly. A teacher who challenged you, who inspired you, who made you believe that anything was possible. The Global Teacher Prize – a US $1 million award presented annually to an exceptional teacher – was launched by the Varkey Foundation in 2015. In 2016, the Foundation wanted to find a unique and ingenious way to announce their Top 10 Finalists.
No one seemed more appropriate than Professor Stephen Hawking, the man whose inquiry and imagination has change the way we view the world. We worked directly with Professor Hawking to make a mini-documentary about the man who inspired him, his maths teacher Mr Tahta. For the children of Dheisha Refugee Camp in Pakistan, their inspiration was Hanan Al Hroub, the winner of the 2016 prize. Drawing parallels between Stephen Hawking, Hanan Al Hroub and the finalists, we helped show that no matter how hard life can be, teachers have always been there behind the scenes showing us the way forward.
